Alaska is US’s 49^th state. It is the biggest one in size and the least populated. Its current population is about 700,000 people and is concentrated mostly around the Anchorage city. The state is neighboring Canada, Russia, the Arctic and the Pacific Ocean.

Alaska became American territory when it was purchased in 1867 from the Russian Empire for 7.2 million dollars. It was reorganized and became part of the US in 1959.

The majority of the population of the state is white. The biggest minority groups are Native Americans, African Americans and Hispanics. The white population is mostly descendents form German, English and Norwegian Europeans. The Native Americans are roughly 15 percent of the population.

The main industries in the state are natural resource extraction, shipping, and transportation. In recent years tourism has become an important economic factor as well. There are two big military bases located in Anchorage and Fairbanks.

Ketchikan’s Tribal Hatchery and Totem Museum

The museum has taken up the task of preserving local Native American heritage and art. The totems are collected for abandoned Tlingit and Haida villages. Most of them date from the 18 or 19^th century. These artifacts were used by the tribes to record their history. Most of the oral stories connected with them have been altered with time and some others lost. The totems were used as funeral ceremonial purposes as well. The ashes of important individuals were sealed in the back of some of the poles.
