Ketchikan’s Tribal Hatchery and Totem Museum
The museum has taken up the task of preserving local Native American heritage and art. The totems are collected for abandoned Tlingit and Haida villages. Most of them date from the 18 or 19th century. These artifacts were used by the tribes to record their history. Most of the oral stories connected with them have been altered with time and some others lost. The totems were used as funeral ceremonial purposes as well. The ashes of important individuals were sealed in the back of some of the poles.
